A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
